Celebrating 10 Years of Open Runs in Community Parks

In June 2015 New York Road Runners launched NYRR Open Run at St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx. A decade later, the program has expanded to a total of 16 parks in all five NYC boroughs and Jersey City. Open Run has grown in scope and impact with 5,500 Open Run sessions to date and drawing thousands of participants in 2024 alone, an incredible increase from the 100 who took part in the program’s first year.

Galo Vasquez: Breaking the Tape and Breaking Barriers

As part of our LGBTQ+ Pride Month celebration, we are highlighting local NYC runners who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Galo Vasquez is one such runner whose talent and dedication to the sport led them to two major wins in just two months, breaking the tape at the RBC Brooklyn Half with a time of 1:13:18 and at the United Airlines NYC Half in March with a time of 1:11:19, completing both races as the top nonbinary runner.
